How Fresh, Local Ingredients Support Your Dog's Health

Choosing the right food for your dog can be overwhelming. With so many options available, it's essential to understand what is best for their health. One of the most effective ways to ensure your dog is getting proper nutrition is through fresh, local ingredients. These ingredients not only provide significant health benefits but also support local farmers and businesses. In this article, we will explore how fresh, local ingredients can enhance your dog’s diet and overall wellbeing.

Local Ingredients: A Boost to Your Dog’s Nutrition

Fresh, local ingredients offer superior nutrition compared to processed foods. When you feed your dog meals made from ingredients sourced locally, you're providing them with nutrients in their most natural form. All commercial dog foods go through various processes, which strip away essential vitamins and minerals.

For example, fresh vegetables like carrots, green beans, and spinach retain their nutrients better when they are used or flash-frozen soon after harvest. In contrast, ingredients in packaged dog food may have traveled thousands of miles and spent months in storage, or are used in a dehydrated, powdered state. As a result, these ingredients lose much of their healthy qualities.

Research shows that small amounts of fresh produce can improve a dog's health by preventing obesity and cancer, strengthening their immune system, and improving skin and coat condition. Incorporating local ingredients means that you're likely getting produce that is in-season and picked or frozen at its peak ripeness, further maximizing its health benefits.

And, it's no surprise that a meat's nutrients are preserved when used fresh. However, the meats found in packaged dog food consist of by-products from the human food industry, such as carcasses, discarded animal parts, and even euthanized or diseased animals that the manufacturer is permitted to label as "meat". These ingredients are heavily processed and dried, resulting in a loss of any nutrients they may have contained. Packaged dog food often times contains cheap plant-based proteins like lentils, peas, and chick peas that are of no benefit to dogs, and can be harmful over time, contributing to teeth problems, digestive issues, and obesity.

The Benefits of Freshness

When food is simple and fresh, it not only tastes better but is also better for your dog. Fresh food retains more nutrients and antioxidants which help reduce inflammation and fight disease. Foods like blueberries are known for their beneficial properties. They are high in antioxidants and can help improve cognitive functions in dogs as they age.

Feeding your dog fresh ingredients can also mitigate common health issues. Many dogs suffer from obesity, allergies and sensitivities that are exacerbated by the fillers, preservatives, and processing methods used in packaged commercial foods. Whole, fresh ingredients allow you to pinpoint what your dog can tolerate and what they cannot, resulting in fewer digestive issues and improved overall health.

Additionally, local farmers often use more sustainable farming practices. When you choose local, you're not just enhancing your dog's health but also reducing your carbon footprint. Supporting farms and grocery stores in your community helps foster a sustainable food system and can lead to environmentally friendly practices that benefit everyone.

Building Your Own Balanced Diet with Local Ingredients

Creating a balanced diet for your dog with local ingredients can be daunting, but it is worth the effort. Start by incorporating a variety of fresh proteins and vegetables. Proteins like chicken, beef, turkey or lamb sourced locally will contain healthy fats necessary for your dog’s energy and overall health.

Vegetables such as carrots, zucchini, spinach and green beans can round out meals, offering vitamins and minerals necessary for optimal health. Be aware however that some vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are gas-causing and not advisable.

Consider a homemade dog food recipe using local meats and produce created by Dr. Karen Becker, but, be aware that the recipe must be followed precisely in order to be considered complete and balanced nutrition for your dog; anything less could be harmful:

  • Protein Base:

1 pound of locally sourced ground lean chicken/beef/turkey or lamb

2 pounds chicken hearts & gizzards

    1 pound chicken livers

12 pasture raised eggs without shells

  • Vegetables: 1 pound spinach, green beans, or zucchini, or a combination

  • Fruit: 12 ounces fresh blueberries

  • Other:

5 Tablespoons human grade organic bone meal or seaweed calcium

    2 teaspoons wheat grass

    1/2 teaspoon himalayan salt

Grind or chop the hearts, gizzards and liver.

Puree the eggs, vegetables, blueberries, bone meal, wheat grass and salt.

Mix together and divide into into smaller containers and freeze.

Makes 11 pounds of food, a 6 day supply for a 50 pound dog. As a general rule, feed 2-3% of your dog's IDEAL body weight per day, split into two meals. Dr. Becker also recommends dosing with Safe Sea daily to balance fatty acids.

Why Local Ingredients Help Support Local Economies

Choosing fresh, local ingredients for your dog's diet has a positive ripple effect on your community. When you buy from local farms and markets, you contribute to the local economy and help sustain family-run farms. This support aids in maintaining not only agricultural practices but also preserving open spaces and community culture.

By prioritizing local ingredients, you help create jobs and keep money circulating within your community. Small farmers often grow with a focus on quality rather than quantity, ensuring that you and your dog receive healthier and tastier food.

Supporting local economies also encourages transparency, as local farmers are more accessible and can provide information about their growing practices. You can ask questions about how the animals are raised and whether they use organic practices. This transparency builds trust and allows you to make informed decisions for your dog’s diet.

How to Find Fresh, Local Ingredients

Finding fresh, local ingredients is easier than you might think. Here are some options to consider:

  • Farmers' Markets: Visiting local farmers' markets is a great way to meet local growers and find fresh produce and meats. Reach out to vendors and ask about their farming practices.
