Big Dog Winners and Judge's Notes

FIRST PLACE - SHELBY

Adored by Greg & Paula

The natural light in this photo of Shelby is exquisite. It highlights the contours of her face, revealing a dog enjoying some quiet time in a sunlit room. Although resting, Shelby remains attentive, clearly mindful of what is happening in her immediate surroundings.

The props play an important role in this photograph. Without them, it would be difficult to distinguish the outline of Shelby’s body from the dark background. This is particularly evident where her hindquarters meet the pink toy. The gray and green props near her front left leg serve a similar purpose, helping to define her shape against the surrounding shadows.

SECOND PLACE - SHILOH

Loved by Jordan

Love this photo! If you’ve ever wondered whether dogs contemplate the beauty around them or perhaps even ponder the future, here’s your proof. The beautiful surroundings have clearly captured Shiloh’s attention. He seems lost in thought, and his expression reflects her quiet, contemplative nature. The warm hues of his coat echo the colors of the autumn landscape, blending him beautifully into the scene.

Capturing a dog lying down outdoors, looking upward in a perfect side profile, is no easy feat. Yet this photograph does it beautifully. The result is a magnificent portrait of a beautiful dog in a stunning autumn setting. You don’t often see dogs posed quite like this. A unique pose for a truly unique dog!

THIRD PLACE - FRANKIE

Adored by Jim & Karin

You just have to love this picture of Frankie. No formal posing for an important photograph for her. “I think I’ll just lie on my back for this one, thank you.” Wisely, the photographer went along with Frankie’s idea, capturing her playful personality perfectly. A formal pose could never convey just how happy and comfortable Frankie is at home. With only one ear and one complete eye visible, and one front paw raised while a back paw rests on the couch, Frankie strikes a contortionist pose that she—not the photographer—wanted us to see.

Normally, placing a light brown subject against a light brown background doesn’t work particularly well. But here, the strong light coming from the right side of the frame beautifully highlights Frankie’s face and legs, helping her stand out from his surroundings. Frankie is one happy dog, clearly enjoying the comforts of a loving home. A great photo!
