Meet the Winners of The Smalls - with Judge's Notes

FIRST PLACE - MIA
Loved, adored by Linda
Like people, dogs sometimes have decisions to make. Do I stay or do I go? Do I want to have my picture taken or not? In this photo, Mia hasn’t quite made up her mind. She is still weighing her options. The slight tilt of her head suggests that a decision is imminent.
The photo makes it clear that Mia is in charge, and she—and she alone—will decide whether to cooperate with the photographer. She really does want to support the photographer’s efforts to capture the perfect picture, but she has boundaries. She will not do “cute” poses. No pink dresses for Mia, or she’s out of here!
The blurred green background is perfect for highlighting Mia’s coloring and the shape of her head. And her eyes tell you that beneath her independent spirit is a very loving and considerate dog.
A great photo that captures Mia’s personality beautifully.
SECOND PLACE - CHEWY
Loved by Ken, Rhoda, and Christian

This photo of Chewy says a lot about his personality. He loves to run and have fun, and this image captures that perfectly. With his ears up, eyes wide open, and a hint of a smile, Chewy looks like one very, very happy dog. Photographing him in a stationary position would never capture her true personality quite as well.
Getting a good photograph of a running dog is not easy. Timing is everything. Keeping the entire dog in focus, from head to tail, usually requires a small aperture, a good eye, and a very quick finger on the shutter release. The photographer accomplished all three in this image.
The small space of visible grass between Chewy’s front legs helps define her stride, while her upright ears as he gallops provide further evidence that he is moving at a good pace and having the time of his life. Photographing Chewy outdoors against a green background also brings out the beauty of his light-colored fur. A great photo that captures both his energy and his joyful personality.

THIRD PLACE - ANA
Adored by Maribel & Sergio
To get this shot, the photographer had to lie very low to the ground. Ana is looking down at the camera, probably thinking, “You sure are going to a lot of effort to get this shot. It must be a very important photo contest. Of course I’ll cooperate!” Ana seems to appreciate the photographer’s effort, taking time out of her busy playtime to pose for this wonderful picture. That thoughtfulness is no doubt part of her personality. She looks like a great companion who is thoroughly enjoying life.
